5 milestone of Malayan cinemas

The Malayalam film industry has come a long way. It has had its fair share of ups and down. In this article, we will look at 5 vital, defining moments in the history of the same.

1. Vigathakumaran (1928)

The first ever Malayalam movie, Vigathakumaran (translation. The Lost Child) was a silent movie. Directed, produced and written by J.C. Daniels, he also played the protagonist in the film. However, no known copy of the movie exists today.

Notably, in 2013, Kamal made a biopic, titled ‘Celluloid’ on Daniels, outlining his struggle to make Vigathakumaran; starring Prithviraj.

2. Balan (1938)

Balan is the first sound film in the Malayalam language. Although there were a total of 23 songs in the movie, the film is lost and only a few stills survive today. Balan is also toted to be the first movie in the genre of ‘melodrama’ in the industry.

3. Kandam Bechoru Kottu (1961)

Kandam Bechoru Kottu is the first ever colour movie in Malayalam. It is an adaption of a play of the same name. A commercially hit film, the film tells the story of Mohammad Kakka, who keeps his savings in the pocket of his kottu (coat). The duration clocks at 156 minutes.

4. Chemmeen (1965)

After a while, filmmakers started to explore themes, technical aspects and professional actors. Many films such as Angadi, starring Jayan were hugely successful. Another notable work is Chemmeen (meaning. The Prawn). It was adpated, too from a novel of the same title. Chemmeen was a National Award winner for the Best Feature Film and is applauded for its cinematography and brilliant cast.

5. My Dear Kuttichathan (1983)

This film is India’s first 3-D movie. For the budget of RS 35 lakhs, it garnered a whopping RS 2.5 crore at the box office. My Dear Kuttichathan is a fantasy film of a little boy with magical powers and his (mis)adventures.

For the sake of simplicity, I have narrowed it down to only 5 films. The extensive mastery of the craft of Malayalam cinema is beyond fascinating. Let me know if you want more based on history.
